Vorum: Poisoned void
18/04/13 || gk
Finland’s Vorum are very much a part of the new old school of death metal. The band is also a bit by the numbers and derivative but make up for it somewhat with high energy and a tendency to veer towards Possessed every now and then. There are a few good songs here. “Death’s stains” is chuggy, has a solid groove and veers between tempos to good effect. “Evil seed” is very Asphyx like in sound and spirit and that’s no bad thing while “In obscurity revealed” is a raging death metal beast that we’ve heard a million times before but is still effective.
There’s nothing actively wrong with this album. It’s all just a touch too derivative even in the realm of the new old school to really stand out from among its peers. Especially considering that Finnish old school death metal might just have a banner year in 2013. Poisoned void is the band’s debut album after a couple of EPs and splits and while there is promise here, it’s not enough for me to recommend buying this album. We all might be better off waiting for the follow up.
7/10: Solid but wholly unremarkable.
After going thru that crap, you most likely wanna read something way more interesting. You do, admit it.
